Florida Senate President To Push Sports Betting Legislation
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Only three months have passed since Florida voters approved Amendment three. The approval seemed to put a dark cloud over the future of gambling in the sunshine state. But even so, Florida Senate President Bill Galvano plans to introduce sports betting legislation later this month.
“We are operating in a different world post-constitutional amendments, but I think there is an opportunity for sports betting in the state of Florida,” He said.
Still, he will have to face some tough challenges moving forward because Amendment three essentially put voters in control of whether or not to expand gambling in the state. He will also have to face strong opposition from the Seminole Tribe if he plans to allow sports betting outside of their casinos.
The details of how exactly he plans to overcome these hurdles are still unclear, but he has ordered staff members and Senator Wilton Simpson, Chair of the Senate Innovation, Industry and Technology Committee, to study the issue and draft legislation before session begins again on March 5.
